Earth Rangers and Call2Recycle Announce the 2016 Battery Blitz School Mission Results!

Earth Rangers and Call2Recycle® are delighted with the incredible results of their Battery Blitz School Mission Contest, which challenged 50 Greater Toronto Area schools to collect and recycle as many used batteries as they could. This Mission not only taught students about the environmental impacts batteries can have when they end up in landfills, it also provided them with a tangible opportunity to take action by properly recycling batteries with Canada's leading battery stewardship organization, Call2Recycle Canada, Inc.

Students in schools across the GTA eagerly accepted the Mission and over the course of 2 weeks, over 5,500 kg of batteries were collected and recycled. That is the equivalent of approximately 239,130 double 'A' batteries or, if stacked end to end, approximately the height of 22 CN Towers!

"Engaging children in environmental issues and presenting them with tangible proof that their collective actions have a direct and positive impact on the environment is core to our programs," says Peter Kendall, Executive Director, Earth Rangers. "Our Battery Blitz School Mission results demonstrate the enormous environmental impact our youth can make through small, individual actions, clearly showing that kids really want to take action to help."

The Mission also included a friendly competition, with schools competing for a pizza lunch celebration featuring a special meet and greet with Earth Rangers and their live Animal Ambassadors. The numbers are in and the winning school is St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Oakville whose students collected an amazing 335 kg of used batteries!

"Our partnership with the Earth Rangers has resulted in keeping over 10,000 kg of batteries out of Canadian landfills in the past 2 years," says Joe Zenobio, Executive Director, Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. "We are pleased to award Earth Rangers with our 2015 Leader in Sustainability Award for their commitment towards environmental sustainability through their dedication with schools and youth across the country."
